Some film tips for this summer

Ensimmäinen kuva on the Book Thief-elokuvasta. Olin kuullut tästä filmistä paljon kehuja. Se olikin todella kaunis kuvaus perheestä, ystävyydestä ja rakkaudesta lukemiseen toisen maailman sodan ajalta. Sotagenre kuuluu meidän suosikkeihin, joten aika paljon on niitä jo nähty, mutta täytyy sanoa, että Kirjavaras (kuva: finnkino.fi) kiilasi ihan meidän suosikkilistan kärkeen. Ehdottomasti katsomisen arvoinen.

Sometimes it feels like really good movies are scarce. Then you get surprised, when you suddenly find several good ones in a short period of time! Here are short descriptions of two good ones we have lately seen. Neither of them is totally new, but both are relatively recent. The first picture is from the Book Thief. I had heard about it from several of our friends, but it took us forever to get to it. I must say that it is a really beautiful depiction of family, friendship and love for reading during the WWII. Because the war genre is in general one of our favorites, we have seen quite a variety of movies on the WWII theme. The Book Thief, however, got immediately to the top of our list.

Toinen filmi, mikä teki vaikutuksen on The Good Lie.

The second film that impressed us lately was The Good Lie. It is about the Sudanese war and its refugees that made it to the US. Most of them were young boys, who had been able to escape by walking hundreds of kilometers from one country to another before finding to safety. Though the Sudanese war has not been a big topic in Europe in the last years, the theme continues to be totally up-to-date in the present political situation. Though The Good Lie resembles at times a documentary, its narrative is powerful. Both the experiences of going through a war and of being a refugee are depicted from the point of view of an insider rather than of an outsider.
